When Fairy Wings And Crowns Don’T Sit Well On Indepedent Girls

Millie is four years old. She’s into everything pre-school girls love and enjoys carrying sparkly handbags containing tiny dolls or fluttering about the house wearing wings and granting imaginary wishes with star-shaped wands. But there’s a flipside to my girly-girl – and it makes my heart sing.

She doesn’t let anyone boss her around. She attempts any challenge herself and expects she can do anything her peers do – whether they are boys or girls. She is strong. She is bold. She doesn’t wait to be rescued. She is my real-life DC Super Hero Girl.

The weekly combination of swimming lessons, ballet classes, playgroup and kindergarten garners a lot of friends – which means a lot of parties. Many themed celebrations and many more dress-ups. And Millie is kitted up and raring to go.

Millie was sent a DC Super Hero Girls costume by the team at Warner Bros. Consumer Products as a reminder that she is a Super Hero too.

Dressed as her alter ago Batgirl, Millie can give any party game a red-hot go, race any fellow partygoer to the top of the slide and zoom down in a flash, clamber through ball pits with ease and climb to the top of any play centre structure with courage and confidence.

Having a costume that includes pants (hooray!) certainly means she does not hold back.

The super-shiny, super cool DC Super Hero Girl Deluxe Batgirl costume includes a hooded top (complete with bat ears), stretchy pants for climbing (and eating birthday cake), a belt, gauntlets, an eye mask and bat wings.

Batgirl Millie is proud to wear her costume down the street, she has a great time at home getting her and her brother out of all sorts of ‘crisis situations’ and play dates with little friends are given a heroic boost when she turns up with her mask and black bat wings.

My little girl is a sponge at the moment and is learning fast. So please excuse me while I join in and encourage her imaginary play and reinforce her new-found ‘I can do it’ attitude she adopts so well while dressed as a DC Super Hero Girl.

When taking on the Batgirl identity through role play, my girl has an opportunity to see herself as I see her – a future mover and shaker.

DC Super Hero Girl costumes are available at Spotlight, Toys R Us, Costume Box and Costume Super Centre, The Deluxe Batgirl costume retails at $49.99. The range includes Wonder Woman, Poison Ivy, Super Girl, Harley Quinn and more.
