A gap in the baby and toddler clothing market for quality, hardwearing outfits with a design edge led Melbourne mum-of-two Karena Simpson to do something about it.

Pappe is a new high-end, luxury Australian fashion label and it is simply beautiful. The premium fabrics used in the Pappe garments are hand picked for softness and longevity – and it shows.

Shopping for her two boys, Karena couldn’t find anything that met her high expectations for design and sophistication. Keeping with the brand’s signature to make clothing with a timeless, minimalist aesthetic, each Pappe garment is meticulously designed, sampled and tested.

The attention to detail is the perfect finishing touch – there’s soft trims, hand-sewn leather embroidered labels, pocket details and mother of pearl buttons.

The clever part about Pappe is that while the fabric, look and feel of each piece is luxurious, the designs are still practical. The clothing is not only comfortable but still very chic. Millie will get so much wear out of her organic cotton tees and spot bloomers (which are made from a Turkish cotton linen chambray).

The label has every piece that should be in a little one’s wardrobe. Cardis, bloomers, jeans, onesies, hats, relaxed pants and stretchy leggings – as well as a range of blankets for bubs – are all in a palette of neutral, unisex colours and chambray, navy and tartan. The handcrafted leather lace-up shoes and lambskin slippers are gorgeous too.

The full Pappe range is available online with worldwide shipping.

Millie takes her Little Maggie Moo summer floral bloomers and navy anchor print top knot headband (and a dolly) for a spin

Your name & brand? Christy & Ansje, Little Maggie Moo

Where are you based? Christy is in Melbourne, Ansje is in Ocean Grove

When was Little Maggie Moo established? December 2013

Your label’s bloomers & head wraps are just adorable on little ones. Where do you find your inspiration? We both love floral prints and bold colours and make a special effort to source fabrics that are different to other handmade shops. Inspiration usually comes from browsing through fabric stores and finding a fabric with that special something!

There’s a lot of market competition, how do you keep ahead of the pack? We actually don’t do a lot of research into what other businesses are doing, we prefer to do what WE like. We’re just lucky that our customers (who come back time and time again) like what we do!

Is it possible to have a work/life balance? It is, but at the moment, the balance is more work than life as we get established. Hopefully in time, it will swing a little more the other way.

Best piece of business advice you’ve received? Join Instagram! It really is the best tool to get your name out there. 99% of our orders come directly from IG mamas.

Little Maggie Moo Summer 2014

How has Instagram changed the way you advertise your brand? Ten months ago we were new to Instagram. I remember calling my brother and asking him what a hashtag was for? Now we’re established, we are very lucky, as many of our IG customers allow us to repost images of their little ones in Little Maggie Moo wares. What better way to advertise our items?! We feel very lucky indeed.

Favourite Little Maggie Moo item? How do you like to see it styled? Our favourite item is our bloomers. They’re so versatile. They’re perfect in the warmer months on their own (who doesn’t love chubby little baby legs?), or can be worn with a pair of tights underneath in the cooler months. Teamed with a cardigan and top knot, your babe is ready!

What’s next for Little Maggie Moo? Tonight (8pm AEDT, November 14) we release our Summer range, which includes some gorgeous fabrics for boys! Also look out for a collaboration with our good friends @paperkranek8 – super excited about this project!!

I love dresses. Swanning around in them makes me happy and are a staple of my style. So it’s the one thing I miss about my wardrobe now Finn needs easy and immediate access to his milk supply. Bye-bye minis, maxis, smocks and frocks – see you in about 12 months. So now what to wear?

It’s not a long time you have to adapt your wardrobe in the scheme of things and having nothing to wear is very much a first-world problem. But I’ll admit it’s so damn hard to look nice, be comfortable and appear like this mum thing is a piece of cake (it isn’t, but I like to at least look the part – both for my sanity and not to frighten passers-by on my daily stroll with the pram). When I found the super-soft bamboo Sangha Waterfall Wrap cardigan from Milk & Love, I did a little happy dance. I had resorted to shapeless jumpers that did nothing for my confidence and made my already-huge boobs look enormous. This wrap, which feels amazing, is SO FLATTERING. Worn open, it drapes beautifully, covers my bum, lengthens my torso and gives me just the right amount of privacy when feeding my baby.

Peek-a-boo! Snuggly under my Sangha Waterfall Wrap

It can be knotted at the front as a shrug or crossed and tied around the waist to turn this versatile piece into a top. It’s stretchy and the perfect purchase for wear during pregnancy and all throughout those breastfeeding days where it seems you spend most of your waking hours with a baby attached to your chest.

Comfy and chic while out and about with Millie and Finn

I wear my wrap when I’m heading out for the day and I know I’ll be feeding Finn at some stage. I’ve been able to snuggle Finn inside my cardigan, providing an extra layer of warmth for him and preventing a flash of boob or stomach to fellow diners/shoppers/pedestrians. Loops and buttons mean it can be wrapped across and fixed into place so your hands are completely free to hold bub and sort out that pesky clasp on your bra or errant nursing pad.

You can change up the look with the variety of ways it can be tied – it can even be worn in reverse for a high neckline and V-shaped back – but also with what you wear underneath. I’ve been able to style it with a patterned tee, pretty camis, long-sleeved tops and fine knits. Layering is key and it means you are prepared for any weather event.

Breastfeeding essentials

It’s available in Black, Mood Indigo and Light Taupe in sizes from XS to XL from Milk & Love.

As soon as Millie entered the world, she became my Little Miss Pink.

Pale pink swaddles, pink printed onesies, musk baby moccs and pastel pink dresses. I love pink on baby girls.

But as she has grown (*sob*), I’ve embraced a rainbow of colours and also the monochrome trend that’s so popular with many children’s labels right now.

Her drawers are still filled with splashes of pink, but now sit alongside a mix of brights and stylish black, grey and white.

Below is a pick of some of Millie’s favourite labels and the pieces that scream ‘colour me happy!’ or best show off monochromatic magnificence.

The best thing about kids is they can get away with wearing anything, so if you go crazy colourful or plain and simple you really can’t go wrong.

Hello Toes – socks and tights for little feet

Socking it to them: It’s a fact that Australia harbours many creative and inspiring new businesses making their mark alongside the mega brands – and it’s no more evident than in the baby and kids market. I kick off my regular Local Label Love feature posts with the bold and bright Hello Toes.

Who: Daniela from Hello Toes, socks and tights for little feet

Where are you based? Seddon, in the western suburbs of Melbourne

When was Hello Toes established? Research and development began in 2011, with the first range sold to retailers in 2012 and delivered into store in February 2013, one week before I delivered my second child.

Why did you decide to create a children’s sock label?  When my son Otis was born I struggled to find socks that weren’t very gender stereotyped, in either blue or pink with an apparently mandatory car or fairy on them. I could find plenty of great clothing for him to have fun in, but socks seemed to be stuck in the ‘basic’ category. I thought socks could be one of the most colourful and interesting item kids could wear, especially since most of the time they tend to be hidden in shoes and under pants – so they are like a little fun secret or surprise. My background is also in marketing, not design, so I thought socks would be a way I could enter into the market whilst leaving all the clothing to the experts!

Hello Toes has all colours and sock styles covered, just perfect for littlies. Where do you find your inspiration?  I find inspiration pretty much everywhere and always have my eyes peeled for interesting colours put together in surprising ways. Children’s book illustrations, paint swatches, Duplo blocks, my collection of Strawberry Shortcake dolls and magazines from the ’80s, my favourite contemporary artists, great stationery…so many ideas!

Hello Toes socks have “interesting colours put together in surprising ways”

There’s a lot of market competition, how do you keep ahead of the pack?  I try to keep my vision and product unique and stay true to what I like versus what I think ‘the consumer’ will want, which is a luxury many of my large competitors would not be able to afford. Most of the time the market likes the same things anyway which is always encouraging! I like the quote: “A flower does not think of competing with the flower next to it. It just blooms”; it reminds me to just do my own thing without comparing myself to others and with that I will (hopefully!) succeed.

Is it possible to have a work/life balance?  It’s a constant juggle and not possible without the help of your village of support. As my children are still young I always put life first so sometimes work suffers, but I would always prefer this than the other way around.

Best piece of business advice you’ve received?  If you don’t love it, don’t do it.

Biggie Smalls Sneaky Socks

Savvy businesses have Instagram accounts these days. How has Instagram changed the way you advertise your brand?  It has introduced Hello Toes to an entire community that I don’t think you can reach via traditional advertising. It’s like a friend telling their friends about something they like and therefore is a very trusted, supportive and encouraging network. Even with my background in marketing I do not use Instagram as a heavy brand push as I’d much rather just show a glimpse or literal snap shot into my little world and hope people enjoy it. I love seeing behind the scenes, which is something you just do not get from an advertisement.

Legs 11 Knee High Socks

Hello Toes has made socks fashionable, not just functional – so what’s your favourite pair and how do you like to see them worn?  That’s such a great compliment, my dream come true!  Choosing a favourite pair would be like choosing a favourite child…but I do have one pair that I seem to put my daughter Pearl in constantly and just seems to go with everything, which is the Legs 11 knee high. It looks fantastic pulled up high with a bit of juicy baby knee, but also is super practical under pants as they keep legs extra warm and can’t get pulled off easily.

Picture this – the perfect nursery or play room for your little one, the centrepiece being some original artwork hanging on the wall designed by Melbourne mum-of-three Kylie Jackson. If you haven’t seen these cute and colourful “wall art for small fry” prints, then have a peek. Picture perfect.

Name & business: Kylie Jackson, WallFry

What do you create? I create art for children’s spaces. We have a range of bold, modern prints and offer customers the option to customise their artwork to co-ordinate with their space.

WallFry’s woodland animals with quotes

When did you start? I first started painting artwork for children back in 2008 when I was pregnant with my first child. We were living in Dubai and couldn’t find anything suitable so created my own. Not long after that WallFry was born and it has grown from there to become hugely popular.

Your wall prints are colourful, cheerful and/or inspirational. Tell us a little about your creative process: In the beginning I was hand painting all my designs on canvas, so there was a lot of waiting for paint to dry before being able to move on to the next step. Now I sketch each design by hand and scan it into the computer where I am able to digitally colour it and add all the finer details. It’s a bit of a mixed bag trying to pinpoint exactly where the inspiration comes from. Most of the time I have ideas for my own children’s rooms or for a friend’s child, and I will create something for them based on that. Other times I have designs in my head for months before I finally get a spare moment to sit down with the sketch book – and it takes a while to make it from sketch to finished design. There are a couple more Australian animals still sitting in the sketch book waiting to be made into finished prints. One day it will happen!

WallFry’s world & Australia map prints (set of 2)

What’s the best thing about having your own business? Being able to do something that you love for a living. I have such wonderful customers who send me photos of their amazing rooms with the artwork in place and find it so rewarding and humbling.

The worst? Long hours and a lot of work, but I am not complaining and wouldn’t trade the flexibility for anything.

What’s been your greatest achievement? WallFry has been featured in lots of publications and websites which is always great! I do always also feel proud to have been able to go from being a pregnant mumma painting some pictures for her new baby to the success that WallFry has become.

Australian animals feature in some of WallFry’s latest designs

Do you have a favourite print? I will always love the safari animals and dog series of prints because they were among the first designs and still so popular. I am also really loving the Australian animal series with meaningful messages I have recently released. I think these ones will have to go on my baby girl’s wall.

What is the most popular with customers? The inspirational typography series is hugely popular because it co-ordinates with pretty much any style of decorating and the colours are fully customisable. It really appeals to a wide range of people. The world and country maps are also a great seller, maps are very on-trend and people love being able to combine appealing artwork/décor with something a little bit educational.

Children’s decor and bedroom styling ideas feature prominently on social media, websites and in magazines. What are your suggestions for updating the look of a child’s room on a budget? Consistency tends to be the key to any great design – you don’t have to purchase heaps of expensive items to make it work. It can just be a matter of co-ordinating colors that you carry throughout the space. DIY is always great too if you are that way inclined or have the time. My best tip though is to purchase timeless items that will grow with your child. This takes the cost out of having to redecorate every couple of years as your child gets older. One of the philosophies of WallFry’s designs is to have artwork that will appeal to babies, children and adults. Artwork that is cute without being ‘cutesy’.

The modern alphabet & numbers prints by WallFry

What’s next for WallFry? I am always designing new prints and series, so you can expect to see a few different WallFry products launching in the next few months. We also have a couple of other ideas in the pipeline – we have written and illustrated a children’s book, for example, so we are finalising that before we approach publishers.

Leather moccs, linen smocks – it’s no accident that Freo-based Hubble + Duke label is worn by the most stylish tots around the world. The beautifully made moccasins, printed socks, accessories and clothing for babies and children has online shoppers eagerly awaiting each release and continually coming back for more.

Name and label? Rosie Flynn & Jo Hankin from HUBBLE + DUKE

What were you doing before starting Hubble + Duke? We started when our youngest bubs had just turned 1 year, Rosie is also an interior designer/architect and Jo has a degree in marketing, we had all mainly been stay-at-home mums for 6-7 years though!

Millie wearing a Hubble + Duke pinafore dress and gold bow Mary-Jane moccasins

Describe the Hubble and Duke child: Words I seem to use all the time on Instagram to describe the children who wear our clothes are ‘gorgeous’, ‘absolutely divine’, ‘stunning’ ‘incredible’ lol! We can’t get enough of seeing beautiful kids in our clothes and moccs! Moccs themselves are super trendy however we love them paired with classic, comfortable clothes like our new leggings and T-shirts. Our knee-high socks seem to create a buzz whenever they’re worn as they are just such a cute vintage look which make mothers and grandmothers swoon!

Millie before her 1st birthday party wearing Hubble + Duke handmade moccasins

How much of your designs are influenced by your own children? Jo and I have a really similar taste in kids clothes. We really love looking back at our favourite pieces of clothing that our kids have loved and worn to death over the last few years! Classic styles that stand the test of time in fabrics that wash well seem to be what we are drawn to most.

Hubble + Duke’s organic cotton, leather patch leggings are coming soon. Pic: Hubble + Duke

Why do you think your designs resonate so well with shoppers? We like to think that our designs appeal to both kids and their parents, many of our customers have a similar aesthetic to us when it comes to interiors and their own clothes – kids’ clothing and interiors more than ever can be seen as an extension of the mothers’ taste and design style. Within the Instagram community there is also a strong desire to support local handmade businesses and we are so grateful for this incredible support base, Instagram is such an amazing tool to really connect with customers.

Handmade goodness. Pic: Hubble + Duke

Do you still pinch yourself about your label’s meteoric rise? It has been a huge amount of work and a steep learning curve seeing as none of us had any experience in business before Hubble + Duke! We definitely wouldn’t be where we are today without Instagram and it is truly amazing to us that we have 48k followers!!

Throwback: Millie in Hubble + Duke bow moccasins and screenprinted tee

Is it important to have your moccasin and linen collections remain handmade here in Australia? Why? We feel that our customers appreciate the time and effort that goes into a locally handmade garment or pair of moccs. Our local sewers love working for us and they are able to work from home and be paid well for consistent and regular work. As our moccasins are made-to-order there is little wastage and our turnaround time is really fast and efficient. We have been so lucky to have recently found a brilliant small family-owned manufacturer in Portugal for our new jersey leggings and T-shirts. We have been really impressed with the quality of other brands who manufacture in Portugal, Spain and Turkey using beautiful organic cotton, we are constantly being approached for wholesale and we hope this will allow us to produce larger quantities and expand into the wholesale market with a great quality, ethically-produced range!

Hubble + Duke AW15 tutu, drop waist dress, smock top and vintage romper. Pic: Hubble + Duke

Are there plans for a bricks and mortar store? Not in the near future, we ship our products all around the world each week and our online store works brilliantly for this. We have a new website in the works which is exciting.

Millie wearing a Hubble + Duke AW/15 drop waist dress in dusty pink and knee high socks

Do you have a favourite Hubble + Duke item? Definitely the moccs are our favourite item, they were our first product and where it all began! Our rompers and knee-high socks are incredibly popular.

Ice blue handmade leather moccasins. Pic: Hubble + Duke

What’s next for Hubble + Duke? We are so excited to get our first big delivery from Portugal! Our new T-shirt collaboration with Lulu Lucky is just so cute, we cannot wait to launch them along with the leather patch leggings, beanies and bibs etc. We hope to do some international trade shows next year and hopefully get more into wholesale with our SS16 collection.

Hats off to Acorn Kids. For most of Millie’s young life her little head has been kept warm and cosy or cool and shaded – all while looking incredibly cute in an Acorn hat. Beautiful merino beanies or bright, reversible sunhats are adorning the heads of kiddies all over the country. We chat to the Melbourne mum behind the label.

Acorn SS14 Lily Sunhat and Florin Sunhat

Name and brand? Fiona Savaris, Acorn Kids

Where are you based? Brunswick, Melbourne, Australia

When was Acorn Kids established? Our first season was AW11 which was launched in March 2011, but I started working on the idea and sourcing samples and suppliers early in 2010.

Millie in an Acorn SS14 Lexi Reversible Sunhat

Why did you decide to create a children’s headwear label? Initially I was looking for a really good quality winter hat for my daughter but could only find options with a bit of cute factor made from acrylic, so decided to start making hats with 100% merino wool and lots of cute factor!

Acorn SS14 Giraffe Infant Sunhat

Your hats are like the icing on the cake for a youngster’s outfit. Where do you find your inspiration? Oh that is an awesome compliment! Lots of places really I am always looking at interesting colour combinations and prints. With the summer range I like to see what is happening in homewares and other areas of design to identify upcoming trends people may be drawn to by the time the range is released. For winter I am always on the lookout for inspiration of new knits, textures and of course the next cute animal-inspired beanie to make!

Acorn SS14 Darcy Trucker Cap

There’s a lot of market competition, how do you keep ahead of the pack? I first and foremost love my products and if there is that passion there from me I have found it will appeal to customers as well. I always strive for the best quality, no acrylics and other non-natural fibres that lead to little sweaty heads so people know that an Acorn product is a quality one. And with the designs I always keep evolving we may re-run some best sellers but we always need new designs each season that keeps the range fresh.

Is it possible to have a work/life balance? I think so, there are times the balance is certainly tested when deadlines are looming and especially when the range is delivered and wholesale shipping times but doing my own business allows me to work around my family, to be there for the school run for Vienna and hang out with my little boy Luca on his home days.

Acorn SS14 Freddie Bucket Hat

Best piece of business advice you’ve received? Do what you love and makes you happy and then you’ll never have to “work” a day in your life. This rings so true to me, as a former accountant I worked in a large corporate firm but just never felt satisfied. I loved fashion dearly and dreamed of producing a product that I loved. Following my heart and passion to firstly work in fashion for a number of local brands and then to start Acorn – it really has given me so much joy and satisfaction.

How has Instagram changed the way you advertise your brand? Instagram is such a great community and gets you in touch with so many like-minded people, it gives businesses like mine the opportunity to show their product in real life that I think it very authentic and appealing.

Acorn SS14 Pirate Bucket Hat and Olivia Reversible Sunhat

Favourite Acorn item? How do you like to see it styled? Oh difficult one, for summer I love the reversible sunhats for girls and just love seeing them worn both sides depending on the outfit and inclination of the little ones! For winter I will always have a soft spot for our animal beanies and love the timelessness of the cable knit range we do.

What’s next for Acorn? I’ve just finished working on next summer’s range plan so it will be all systems go to get that range sampled and looking amazing in the next few months and our AW15 is currently being hand made by our women’s collective. We’ve got a few new styles for the little superheroes that are going to be amazing.

Summer’s almost gone, so there’s something odd to be wearing thongs from this point on. Leave the flip-flops for kicking off at the beach or public pool, I say.

The hot weather is still coming at us though, so what’s a mum and her little girl to wear on their tootsies when it’s mighty fine outside and you just want some mighty fine footwear to match?

Mum and daughter dressing at its best

Let me introduce you to Alohas sandals.

Alohas are traditional Spanish handmade leather sandals with a sustainable rubber sole and are durable, comfortable and stylish.

I have a pair of the shiny High Society rose gold Alohas and Millie has the versatile little Keikis – a teeny velcro version for toddlers and children.

Not my legs. PIC: Alohas

We have both worn our Alohas EVERYWHERE. With shorts to the beach, with dresses while out for dinner or to parties. We are twinning, but it’s not in-your-face matchy-matchy, just a chic and cute way to wear similar styles of funky footwear. We love them (Millie insists on wearing hers when I have mine on) and I love that we can still be comfortable while looking so fashionably elegant (thongs be gone!).

The Keiki kids sandals come in navy or pink and the women’s style comes in a range of matt or shiny finishes, including silver, gold, rose gold, mint, pink and navy with the staples including black, tan, white or leopard.

Green with envy? PIC: Alohas

The team behind Alohas made an effort to create a sandal that is sustainable with the environment, helps to boost the Spanish economy, gives a little glimpse of Spanish culture and is fun to wear. They’ve nailed it.

Shop online at Alohas Australia and follow along on Instagram or Facebook.

Alohas for the win

The Wild Collective hopes to set a new benchmark for large-scale shopping events – and the annual fair is about to land in Melbourne.

The premier event will showcase stalls from leading international and local designers and contain individual spaces to entertain every member of your tribe.

That’s right – while you shop, Dad can relax in the pop-up pub. Or the whole family can fill up at the Eatery and then parents can join their children in the Kids Zone to mix up the day.

More than 120 leading designers will bring their shop to the fair, the handpicked vendors offering homewares, fashion, food and everything in between.

Cooking demonstrations and live entertainment will round off what is promising to be a shopping experience not to be missed.

Designers and businesses are contributing to a Hunt and Gather box for a limited number of visitors to collect sought-after items to eat and take home using a supplied map. Businesses involved include LuxBite, Humble Body, Paper to You, Fizzy Pop Designs, My Little Tribe and Arlo and Co.

The market will allow shoppers to be inspired by premium brands offering the best in eclectic and handmade fashion, beauty products, handcrafted furniture, toys, eco-friendly products and art.

Baby change facilities and will be available in the parents’ area, which doubles as a space for the little ‘wildlings’ to rest quietly and be fed. A play zone for little and big kids will provide an area to let off some steam. Men and teens can seek refuge in the Man Cave, a zone for the boys to hang out, relax or play pool.

Australian children’s clothing label Oobi will use the event as a platform to launch its exciting new summer range, I Love Candy. The collection will continue the brand’s vision to make fun, unique and accessible clothing for girls aged newborn to 13 years.

Oobi will also introduce its charitable program and has pledged to donate a piece of clothing to a child in need with every piece sold from spring’s Barefoot Princesses range, which will be released early August.

The release of Oobi’s new range at The Wild Collective comes with some good news for children in need

The Wild Collective is a concept that creators Amy Cimino and Renee Falkh have been developing for years after researching local and international events, fairs and exhibitions.

“The Wild Collective is for anyone. We have created a new way to shop by transforming the retail experience to be fun – not just a quick necessity,” say the pair.

“The Royal Exhibition Building is the perfect venue to kick off The Wild Collective and it will be a sight to behold when people see for themselves what we do with it.”

“This event is all about bringing special, handpicked brands together in a space that is more than just functional. It will excite, entice and exhilarate the imagination.”

The Wild Collective is on at the Royal Exhibition Building in Melbourne from August 15-16. Doors open 10am-4pm. Entry is $2, children under 15 free.
